They do not require a lot of space and will also be ready for harvest in just a couple of weeks! After that, you will be able to harvest it for about 4 months.

How to grow dill in aerogarden

Dill is one of the most popular herbs. It provides a lot of aroma to your food and can also be used as an addition to jarred vegetables. It is really easy to grow and does not require much care. The biggest concern about the whole process is making sure that your dill has enough water.

You can buy dill seed pods so that you do not have to worry about making your own.

How long does dill last?

Dill is a member of the herbs that you can grow indoors, meaning that the life expectancy is about 4 months. All though I have experienced much better results myself. The longest that I have been harvesting dill indoors was 6 months. If you include the period that it took for the plant to be harvest-ready you get a total of a bit less than 7 months in total.

How long till my first dill harvest?

It will not take you long to harvest the first dill branches indoors. About 2 to 3 weeks is the approximate number. After it has grown to the perfect size for harvesting, you can trim it 2 times a week. Doing it regularly is important to keep it growing and also keeping its size under control.

How to prune Aerogarden dill?

I would recommend that you use regular scissors or gardening shears when you are pruning your herbs. So to be exact there are 2 ways of pruning dill indoors.

METHOD 1: The haircut

Just like it sounds, you will just trim the biggest stems on the top. I would go as long as 2 to 3 inches from the top down. When you are using this method always go for the longest stems. After you are done you can use your fresh dill right away.

METHOD 2: Stem cut

By using this method, you will take your cutting tool (either scissors or gardening shears) and cut the stem as low as possible. Cut your stems one by one to be more precise and be careful not to damage any other stems that you are planning to leave intact. I would really not recommend using a knife to do this because it is dangerous and you can get hurt quickly. If you apply this method, the stem that you have cut will most likely never grow any dill again.

IMPORTANT!

Never cut more than one-third of the entire plant. This will shock your plant too much and you do not want that.

How to harvest aerogarden dill?

Harvesting dill is the same thing as pruning/trimming it. Cut it either 2 inches from the top down or cut an entire stem as low as possible. Always make sure to adjust your lights after cutting your dill. If your dill is now an inch shorter, you should also lower your lights by one inch.

Keep in mind not to harvest more than 1/3 of it to ensure that it will still have enough energy to grow back. If you are harvesting dill that is not growing in an aerogarden, make sure to water it the day before your harvest. This will hydrate the plant and also clean the leaves. If you are using an aerogarden, you can just spray a bit of water on the leaves.

How to preserve dill?

The ideal temperature to store dill at is about 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 degrees Celsius ). At this temperature, you can expect your dill to have a shelf life of about 3 weeks. If we crank it up a little and try preserving our dill at  41 degrees Fahrenheit (5 degrees Celsius) then the expected shelf life period drops down to 2 weeks.  If you try storing it in a place that has below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, this may result in freeze damage, which will result in your dill losing water and going bad. If this happens, do not spray any water on it. It would just bring up the risk of bacterial rot.

What if dill gets too long?

Do not worry if your dill has gotten a bit “out of hand”. Just cut a bit more of it and give it a nice haircut. Before using it in your kitchen, make sure to remove all leaves that have already started to turn into seeds.

Which AeroGarden is the best for growing dill?

Since dill really doesn’t require a lot of space you can grow it on any AeroGarden. If you want to grow other things as well then I would recommend that you use the harvest model.

How to transplant dill from aerogarden to the soil?

  1. Get some pots that you want to grow dill in and fill them up about 3/4 with soil
  2. Make a hole in the middle of the soil and take the seed pod out of your Aerogarden
  3. Remove your plant from the grow basket. You can try removing it without breaking the grow basket, but if you have to, take a pair of gardening shears and cut the grow basket open. It is really important not to damage any roots at all.
  4. Plant your dill in the pot and fill the remaining ¼ with soil. Have at least 1 inch of the stems in the soil. This will ensure that your plant is more stable.

TIPS:

I would highly recommend using pre fertilized soil instead of unfertilized soil. And when it comes to pots I always prefer the ones that have small holes on the bottom.

Make sure to water your plant regularly after you have transplanted it.
